Mary Catherine Maureen Finnegan

Mary Catherine Maureen Finnegan

Mary Catherine Maureen Finnegan (née Bowler)
         passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 30th;
                               just two weeks shy of her 91st birthday.

When asked about growing older, she always said that the key to staying young was to

“keep your hands busy and your mind always thinking of others.” Maureen devoted her life to service and to her community.

She was born in beautiful Point Anne to Tom and Bernice Bowler (Hart). Maureen was raised in a loving family in a community she adored. Maureen met and fell in love with Leo Finnegan at St. Michael’s Catholic High School in Belleville. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past June. Together, on Low Street (where the Finnegan’s many neighbours became lifelong friends), Maureen and Leo raised 3 beautiful children; Erin (Brent), Patrick (Debbie) and Peter (Marisa). Even after all of these years, Leo would still refer to Maureen as “the smartest girl in school.”

In January 1997, Maureen retired from her role as manager of the Prince Edward Corrections Advisory Board. She loved her work and approached each day with empathy, understanding and grace; traits that she carried into her retirement. She was one of Community Care for Seniors’ longest-serving volunteers and was the first woman to serve as chair on the Picton Police Services Board. In addition to this, she was on the board of the Children’s Aid Society, Children’s Services Committee, Alternatives for Women, St. Vincent de Paul, Adult Mental Health Co-ordinating Committee, Prince Edward Chapter of the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation, and more.

To quote a birthday card that was recently left anonymously at Hallowell House for Maureen, “To everyone whose life you touched, we’d like to say thanks so much.”

Maureen is best remembered for her compassionate heart, her sharp wit, her sage wisdom and her ability to connect everything in life to a song. Maureen drew strength from her faith in God and was a longtime member of St. Gregory’s Parish.

Maureen will be deeply missed by her husband Leo, her three children, her seven grandchildren; Sarah (Alex), Jeffrey, David (Amanda), Shannon, Julia, Ethan and Bridget as well as her two great-grandchildren Griffin and Miller.
