Richard Canniff Foster
November 11, 1935 – May 29, 2026
With sadness, his family announces the passing of
Richard Canniff Foster,
aged 90, of Picton, ON.
Richard was the son of Sherman and Eva Foster of Cold Creek Road in Hillier, ON.
He attended public school at the Cold Creek Road school and high school in Wellington, ON.
After graduating from the Kemptville Agricultural College in 1958, he returned to the family farm where he raised cattle and cash crops.
He farmed initially with his father and later with his sons.
In the 1980s, Richard joined the Bay of Quinte Mutual Insurance Company as a farm inspector after previously serving on the
company’s board of directors. Richard enjoyed this role as it allowed him to travel throughout eastern Ontario, where he met many interesting people and brought home colourful stories.
Richard married Lorraine Wilson of Kemptville in May of 1959. In their 67 years together, they maintained a strong,
loving partnership and supported each other throughout their careers, the raising of four children, and growing older together.
Richard and Lorraine also shared a deep faith and, for many years, attended Wellington United Church, and later First Baptist Church
and Gilead Fellowship Church in Picton, ON.
Richard loved to travel. He and Lorraine enjoyed trips in Canada, the US, Europe, Central and South American and Israel.
One of his treasured memories was a cruise around Cape Horn that included a day excursion to Antarctica.
Richard had a keen mind and was intentional about staying abreast of current events. He read extensively in a range of genres from
his weekly McLean’s magazine to history, science and fiction. He was also a fan of CBC Radio and often repeated interesting anecdotes
and new things he had learned.
Richard will be dearly missed by his siblings: Edith Cairns (the late Alfred) and Theodore Foster (the late Joan).
He was predeceased by his sister Ruth Crawford and her husband Douglas.
Richard will also be remembered with great love and affection by his children: Dianne Foster Kent, Janice Hawes (Gordon),
Michael Foster (Dana) and Daniel Foster (Lori). He was much loved “Poppo” to Connor Kent (Natalie Gustar), Katharine Hawes,
Megan Foster (Jeremy Glazier), Juliana Hawes (Nolan Jarv), Canniff Foster and Nicolas Foster (Sage Noxon).
He was also the great-grandpa of Camille Kent.
Visitation will be held at the
Ainsworth Funeral Home, 288 Noxon Avenue, Wellington
on Sunday, June 7th, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.
Funeral Service will also be held at Ainsworth Funeral Home on Monday, June 8th, at 1:00 pm.
