Lionel Delano Johnstone,
December 9th, 1941 - July 17th, 2026
Lionel went home to be with the Lord at Hospice Prince Edward
where he died peacefully with his wife June Anne (Edmiston)
holding his hand.
They shared 63 years of marriage and friendship with countless adventures that included quitting their jobs to celebrate
Canada’s 100th birthday in 1967, travelling coast to coast in a VW Beetle for 3 months.
Lionel loved sailing his friend Harry’s 48-foot ketch across to Olcott, NY but was just as keen on paddling one of the many cedar-strip canoes
he built in the wilderness of Algonquin Park. Marathon running was his passion for several years with his first in Ottawa and last in
Washington, DC with the US Marines. The marathons took them to many parts of the US and Canada.
The youngest child of Robert Cambridge Johnstone and Leah Delarosa Johnstone, Lionel’s Mom died when he was 6 years old
and his early years were difficult as he moved many times and changed schools frequently. That didn’t stop his desire to learn and he
studied hard to create a career path that was very diverse - first in advertising, then civil engineering design, sales management for
a large American company that sent him to BC to open a branch there to serve western Canada. Eventually he and his brother-in-law
started an industrial pump business of their own. Not one to cave-in to retirement, he took a job with Lee Valley where he
enjoyed helping customers find the right tool for the job and became one of their seminar leaders.
Moving to Wellington twenty years ago meant ‘true’ retirement and Lionel, a life-long learner, spent his time digging deep into the
Bible and praying for others, many of them never knowing.
The family is grateful for Hospice Prince Edward, Dr. M. Shoniwa, Lindsey at Ontario Health at Home,
Brad Gunn and Cyril Kocherry for their care and guidance.
